Smash the Class, Episode 6: Discussing the Contradictions within the School

In our sixth episode, Sonia and Nicole expand upon ideas that they had written in their article “The Revolutionary Power of Asking Questions.” They discuss the ways that the school systems—regardless of their positions as public, private, or anything in between— are inherently colonial and imperialist structures that maintain specific hierarchies.

It is imperative that we explore the ways that these structures operate and how they ensure that change doesn’t happen, even as they make the claims that they are spaces of change and learning. We need to better understand the ways that people who grow within them learn their ‘place’ in society, and we need to recognise the ways in which they coerce people to assimilate into society’s desires. We believe that there needs to be more open discussion about the ways that all people, particularly marginalised people, are done a disservice by schools while also understanding that reforming them will never be enough.

In exploring this, we outline the ways in which traditional structures within the school maintain the status quo and teach children the supposed ‘correct’ way of behaving. We also outline the contradictions that are inherent in what we, as a society, believe schools are for and what they are actually designed to do.

Enjoy! And if you’d like to help us explore other topics of anarchist education, please feel free to reach out to us on our email or any of the social media listed here.

Smash the Class, Episode 2: An APN Conversation

APN turns one this year! And in the name of celebration, we wanted to sit down and have a little reflection about how APN started and what we hope happens in the next year.

In this episode, Nicole sat down and talked with both Daniel and Sonia. There was so much that they all discussed that it’s hard to know where to start. From the inspiration and impetus to start the network, how COVID has played a part in building learning and activist communities, to the need for unlearning harmful beliefs in our own spaces in order to contribute to liberatory movements… we covered a lot of ground in what feels like a short time.

This conversation was such a delight, and it really helps to shine a light on a lot of what we try to do in the development of this digital community. We’re really excited to share it with you!

Oh, and if you’re interested in joining us or working with us, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

(Also mentioned in the episode was a fellow collective, Gata Negra. They’re also an awesome project, so go check them out!)

Joyful Resistance, July 2

Online event, Friday, July 2, 2021, 4 PM UCT (5 PM BST / 6 PM CEST / 12 PM EDT)

Being an anarchist educator can be a pretty lonely affair from time to time. We’ve seen a need to approach this issue by many of our members and participants in our events, and we’d like to do something practical about it. Our first session was wonderful, and we’ve started registration for our second meeting.

Our next meeting will take place on July 2nd, 4pm UCT. If you’d like to join our group, please sign up below. You will be asked to provide an e-mail address, and a preferred language (Spanish or English).

Kropotkin and the Radical Educators – A Global Historical Perspective

Online event, Thursday, April 22, 2021, 6-7 PM UCT (check local times below)

UPDATE: A video recording of this discussion is available on the APN YouTube channel.

During the early 20th century, radical educators from different parts of the world engaged with Peter Kropotkin’s anarchist theory when devising and implementing educational experiments in diverse socio-political contexts. While Kropotkin was not known as an educational figure like Dewey or Montessori, his anarchist theories, and his support of educators, made him an important figure for many intellectuals and educators. In this webinar, Yotam Ronen will present Kropotkin’s influence over radical educators in different sites of learning throughout the first half of the 20th century, and investigate the diversity in which educators have engaged with his work and applied it to their educational practice.
