Being an anarchist educator can be a pretty lonely affair from time to time. We’ve seen a need to approach this issue by many of our members and participants in our events, and we’d like to do something practical about it. Our first session was wonderful, and we’ve started registration for our second meeting.

Our next meeting will take place on June 4th, 4pm UCT. If you’d like to join our group, please sign up below. You will be asked to provide an e-mail address, and a preferred language.

Studying for Another World: A Book Event with Eli Meyerhoff

Online event, Thursday, June 3, 2021, 4 PM CEST / 10 AM EDT

The common conception that learning must occur within an official, state-mandated education system is neither true nor harmless. Our desire to learn and develop often forces us to succumb to systems of control and of racial, sexual, and colonial violence. But this doesn’t have to be the case. In this event, Eli Meyerhoff will present his recent book Beyond Education: Radical Studying for Another World, in which he argues that key elements of education emerged from histories of struggles in opposition to alternative modes of study bound up with different modes of world-making. He draws on historical research as well as involvement in an anarchistic free university.

The event will begin with a presentation by our guest speaker, to be followed by group discussions and a coming together at the end for conclusions and questions from participants. The first part of the event will be live-streamed on YouTube. In preparation for the event, we suggest reading this interview with Eli: https://thenewinquiry.com/a-detrimental-education/

As all APN events, this event is free, but requires registration. Please register here: forms.gle/JR9zmj6DTusNSAtM8

Joyful Resistance, May 7

Online event, Friday, May 7, 2021. Choose the timezone that works best for you.

Being an anarchist educator can be a pretty lonely affair from time to time. We’ve seen a need to approach this issue by many of our members and participants in our events, and we’d like to do something practical about it.

Creating a community to share experiences and ideas is a useful approach to develop ourselves as educators, but we also need each other to take care of ourselves.
Mutual care, as the emotional part of mutual aid, is an essential part of our survival and resistance in neoliberal educational environments. We’d like to invite all of you to our monthly Joyful Resistance group, where we are creating a safe space of mutual support to endure our struggles and create resistance networks together. Here, we’ll have a safe space to meet others, criticize safely, open up, give and receive support, and keep on our educational work together.

Our goal is to develop self-directed groups where we can create our own structures, topics and agendas.

In order to facilitate these meetings, we’ll have three different meetings during each date, adapted to 3 different time zones. You can choose to participate either in Spanish or English, just remember to register in advance. we’ll send you the link to the event a couple of days in advance. Link to the registration form:

Kropotkin and the Radical Educators – A Global Historical Perspective

Online event, Thursday, April 22, 2021, 6-7 PM UCT (check local times below)

UPDATE: A video recording of this discussion is available on the APN YouTube channel.

During the early 20th century, radical educators from different parts of the world engaged with Peter Kropotkin’s anarchist theory when devising and implementing educational experiments in diverse socio-political contexts. While Kropotkin was not known as an educational figure like Dewey or Montessori, his anarchist theories, and his support of educators, made him an important figure for many intellectuals and educators. In this webinar, Yotam Ronen will present Kropotkin’s influence over radical educators in different sites of learning throughout the first half of the 20th century, and investigate the diversity in which educators have engaged with his work and applied it to their educational practice.

Here’s the zoom link/invitation for the webinar: zoom.us/j/94658774270?pwd=RSt0OWx5aXNvY… Passcode: 504058
